What is Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi— is a ten-day festival that celebrates the elephant god Ganpati or Ganesha. Ganesha is believed to be the remover of obstacles and the bringer of prosperity, wisdom and happiness.
The time of the festival usually coincides with the month of August or September. The festive days are observed with prayer, the Pooja of the Ganesha idols, the chanting of Vedic hymns, and fasting. Although the festival is celebrated across the country, It is more popular in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. A prime ritual during the festival is immersion or Visarjan. It involves a rally of the Ganesha idol with a great deal of dance music and celebration followed by its immersion in a nearby water body.
