Malaysia’s Independence Day, popularly known as National Day or Hari Merdeka in Malay is celebrated annually on August 31st to mark the country’s independence from British Rule in 1957. Independence Day is celebrated with much pomp and galore. In the days leading up to the event, Malaysian towns and cities are beautifully decked up with shimmering lights. On 31st August, His Majesty, the King, and government leaders sit among thousands of spectators to watch the National Day Parade at Merdeka Square. At the end of the parade, the crowd shouts “Merdeka!” honoring the original declaration of independence.
